Whether you want to improve your health, whether you want to save animals from the suffering they do in our factory farms, or whether you've just been hearing a lot about plant-based eating and would like to try it, this could be an important two-weeks for you.

What Can the Quick Start Program Do For Me?

Quick Start can help begin the process of preventing and reversing lifestyle related chronic diseases such as:

Why a Quick Start?

The short answer is: Because you can do anything for 2 weeks!

The long answer is a little more complicated. For important biological reasons, we have a tendency to like foods which are calorie-rich, because those foods help us to survive and thrive in the state of nature.

Now that our world includes fast-food restaurants and 24-hour supermarkets, it’s not adaptive to eat many of the foods that we crave. Our attachment to unhealthy foods has both physical and psychological elements.

How can we break the spell these foods cast over us, and achieve a state where the foods that appeal to us are the foods that are good for us? Just acknowledging, intellectually, that we are programmed to like unhealthy foods can help us to overcome their appeal. But we need a strategy as well.

Typically a managed transition is helpful in making the change, with expert advice and social support. A “cleanse” can help: not one of the commercial varieties, but a temporary simplifying of diet to reset your metabolism and give your palate a chance to detect the nuances of flavor in whole plant foods.

This is where the Quick Start comes in. It is a planned, structured, organized, and well-supported program to move you from your old way of eating, to a new way of eating that will help you to build and create new health.

Modern medicine has its place and is crucial for acute care, but the building blocks of long term health and healthy aging are elements that you choose and that are within your control, such as exercise, rest, stress management and healthy food.

The Quick Start program focuses on food, one of the inputs to health which is most powerful and over which we have the most control. However, as you transition your way of eating, you should also keep in mind the other elements of health, and aim for moderate exercise, good sleep, and a positive connection with other people in your life and with the natural world.

LAB APPOINTMENTS

You will need to get a fasting LIPID panel (a Cholesterol test for LDL, HDL, Total and Triglycerides) sometime in the week before the first class and another one two weeks later, before the last class. This will enable you to see the measurable health benefits you can achieve.

You can order these from Health Testing Centers dot com (the price listed on their website is $39) and have your blood drawn at Quest Diagnostics or Lab Corp.  There is also a new place in Tyler called Labs Your Way at (6004 S. Broadway).  They accept walk-ins and the price listed for their lipid panel is $49.

WHERE WILL THE 3 IN-PERSON SESSIONS BE HELD?

All in-person sessions for both series will be held at the Cascades Golf & Country Club, in either the Theater Room or the Wine Cellar.

How Do You Know if You Are Really Healthy? It is important to find out your health “numbers” and then learn what your results mean. (Be sure to bring the results from your blood test.)

How Do You Begin a Whole Foods Plant Based Diet?  Important foods to eat and important foods not to eat.

WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN DAY TWO?

You Can Actually Prevent Some Killer Diseases! If you think the only way to prevent heart disease, diabetes or a stroke is by taking medication or having invasive procedures, think again.  Come and find out how to change your lifestyle so you can avoid those medications, invasive procedures and even disability or death from heart disease, diabetes or a stroke.

Let’s Talk about Cancer! Learn some lifestyle changes you can make to actually prevent many cancers, or, how to strengthen your immune system to fight cancer if you already have it.

WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN DAY THREE?

Going Forward!  Once you are aware of your health “numbers’ and the lifestyle changes that can lead to better health, you will want to learn the secrets to help you feel good, look good and maintain your health as you go forward.

How Do You Know if You Are Really Healthy? It is important to find out whether your health “numbers” have improved, and what to do if they haven't. (Be sure and bring the results from your “after” blood test.)

WILL WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO EAT PLANT-BASED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS SERIES?

Of course not. I am hoping that this program will give you a chance to try it whole-heartedly while getting encouragement and support. Then at the end of the two-weeks, I hope that you will be able to see an improvement in your “numbers” and in the way you feel. If you find it was a pleasant experience and you had good results, maybe you will decide, on your own, to change the way you eat.
