An Interview with Melinda
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Healthy Weight Loss Expert?
To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting “compelling story” that brought me to where I am today, coaching people like you on exactly what to do to lose weight and regain your health.
That defining moment in my life happened in the summer of 2004 when I learned of my friend Nan’s cancer diagnosis. We were both in our fifties and horrible things like pancreatic cancer weren’t supposed to happen to people our age.
In the next couple of years, two other good friends, one in her late fifties and the other in her early sixties, were also diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer. After Nan’s death in 2007, I began to think about the young adult children in those three families. Would they be doomed to the same diagnoses? Was cancer just a genetic ‘luck of the draw?’
Because I had always been an avid reader of health information, I decided to do a much more thorough search of the scientific literature to find out if there was actually a way to significantly lower a person’s risk of developing cancer. I wanted to find out for those young adults and I certainly wanted to find out for myself.
I discovered that there was a way to significantly lower a person's risk of developing cancer - and heart disease.
I decided to write a book spelling out my findings. Two years later, in 2010, my first book, Diet and Cancer: Is There a Connection? was published.
Overweight is not just about how you look and it is not to be taken lightly. It is a serious concern. If you are overweight, you are either already ill, or at a very high risk of becoming ill.
Since one of the risk factors for heart disease and one of the risk factors for cancer is being overweight, I decided to start there with my teaching and coaching.
I have since made a commitment to dedicate my professional life to helping women lose weight, if they need to, but also teaching them how they can live a life of health rather than disease.
Who are your clients exactly?
I mainly work with women in their forties and fifties (and beyond) who are overweight, yet who are health conscious, but have never been taught exactly how their weight relates to their overall health and well-being. Women who shed excess weight in their forties and fifties, decrease their risk of getting breast cancer by 50 percent.
That’s important.
How are you different from other weight-loss coaches?
Having read and studied hundreds of research studies and books, I know the diet and lifestyle changes you must make to insure your longevity and the prevention of chronic diseases. I work with smart women who not only want to be successful at weight loss, but successful in living a healthy life. Because my focus is very narrow, what you get with me is no-nonsense, undiluted expertise on what works for women who are trying to lose weight and/or get healthy. I am an expert at this stuff and that’s why my clients get great results.
I do not advocate a high-protein diet like many other weight-loss coaches because those diets elevate most of the risk factors for heart disease. They also cause calcium loss and weakening of bones; which can eventually lead to osteoporosis. These high-protein diets are high-fat diets. The U.S. surgeon general has concluded that high-fat diets increase your risk of cancer as well as gall stones. High-protein diets cause significant kidney damage and can create kidney stones as well as constipation and digestive problems.
The reason that high-protein diets are so popular is that for the first three-months, people do lose weight and experience a drop in cholesterol and triglycerides. However, from three to six months later, a person’s health starts to take a turn for the worse.
What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?
The Healthy Weight Loss™ coaching programs were created for women who are absolutely excited and deadly serious about getting healthy as well as slim and trim, not waking up in the middle of the night with anxiety about their next doctor’s appointment. They were created for you so you can put systems in place that will help you get your numbers into the absolutely healthy range, and to lose a meaningful amount of weight if you need to, within the next year – not in 4 or 5 more years.
Being a high achieving go-getter myself, I’m known to work best with other high achieving go-getters who are super-ready to get going, and just want to know exactly what steps they need to take. Consider this coaching to be an action learning course and you will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses anymore, just a totally different way of thinking and full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: becoming slim and trim, getting your numbers into the healthy range, and gaining health and vitality in record time.
What type of woman is this program NOT going to work for?
Please know that I’m very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for this program and won’t get the results they would sign up for. (It wouldn’t be fair to them.)
Another type of person I won’t work with (without exception) is the whiner or the chronic skeptic, as well as someone who consistently makes excuses for not getting their assignments done or challenging every aspect of the program. If you are one of these people, I gently and respectfully ask that you not call and I hope you understand why. We’ll probably just not work well together and I wouldn’t want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair?

NOTE: If you are on any medication for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, angina or high blood sugar, be sure to let your doctor know that your numbers will be falling and your medication will need to be reduced in order to avoid any dangerous disruption of your heart muscle.
I have a family, a job and a busy life. Although I really want to lose weight and get healthy, I don’t know if I will be able to do this around my family.
These programs are certainly recommended for husbands and kids (it is very important that they get healthy, too), and you will be able to do it at a much faster pace if your family is onboard. However, if you have to take it at a much slower rate, know that this approach will take longer than if you could throw yourself into it, but if you don’t ever start, you will certainly never get there. They say every journey starts with a single step and I know, personally, that I’d rather fail miserably at something I tried, than never have given myself the chance to succeed. The real question is: how much do you really want it? If you want it a lot, you will find the time to do it.
How quickly can I expect results?
Virtually all clients see results within the first month. To realize all the above results, will depend upon how overweight you are and how high your numbers are.
How long is the program?
The most popular program runs for 3 months. Why? Based on my experience of working with clients over the years, it usually takes at least 3 months to lose 25 pounds and that seems to be a pretty consistent goal for women who sign up.
Do people ever re-up?
Yes, people who started the program with very high numbers, will find that they need to continue getting the support offered until they reach their final weight-loss goals and other health measurements.
